Fresh Thoughts for Your Monday - Be. Peace.

Life can be overwhelming at times, including those times when things feel positive and good in our lives.

If your plate seems full--even if it's heaped with mostly positive things, breathe in peace. When your stress levels soar, breathe in peace.

Just a few smooth, deep inhalations and exhalations will help you attain a more peaceful and calm state.

As you become peaceful, pass your peace on to others. Your peace may be an oasis for them.

So today, this week:

Breathe in peace. Feel peace. Pass peace to others. Be peace. Be. Peace.

Calm in the Storm

One recent Sunday, we prayed these words at church:  "Oh God of peace, keep us from a mindless acceptance of things as they are. Let us all know that at the heart of change and turbulence there is an inner calm that comes from faith in you, and that from this central heart of peace, there may flow a creative compassion, a thirst for justice, a relentless proclamation of your love, and a willingness to give of ourselves in the Spirit of Christ...."  It seems as if we can easily get caught up in the turbulence of change, the deep valley of worry or the loud din of drama.  Yet, if we think about it, the better place is to be centered in a state of calmness. Only then, I believe, when we are free of agitation, distraction and disturbance can we truly feel blessed and open ourselves to being a blessing to others.

Hush

Sometimes my mind is so busy that all I hear is the chatter of my own sober thoughts.  But while taking a walk recently, a wise old oak tree helped me to stop my mental talk in its tracks (reluctant as it may have been to go) and to return to the moment.  The wind had picked up just as I walked by the tree.  Her dried brown leaves, still stubbornly clinging to the ends of her limbs, started to rustle, admonishing me to "Hush!". The tree's whisper snapped me out of the prison of my thoughts and into the restful place of Now.  Since then, every time I get caught up in my thoughts, I remember the beautiful, old oak tree's message to me and I come back to the present with a new sense of calm and peace.
